The new Matkailukeskus Niemenharju in Pihtipudas hides a versatile set of services inside. The architectural feat constructed out of wood has a homey restaurant, café, Kotipizza, Scanburger and a store with a selection of basic groceries. In addition to the products and fuel available for purchase at the service station, customers can also enjoy the family business’s car repair shop services available just a few kilometers away. Professional drivers can use the well-equipped rest space, including sauna and bathrooms. The second floor of the main building encompasses 10 well-equipped hotel rooms. The Guesthouse located next to the main building has 12 cosy rooms with two single beds. Breakfast and use of the sauna in the camping area service building are included in the price. Modern camping cabins and a well-equipped caravan area with 45 spaces are located in the shore area of Lylylampi Pond. A high class camping area service building is equipped with shower and sauna facilities, a kitchen, and laundry room. Tent campers can enjoy comfortable spots in the beautiful pine forest scenery near the pond. The caravan area will be open for summer usage in May/June 2017. There are plenty of activities available: fishing, canoeing, swimming, playing disc golf and bocce, or by grilling on the campfire. Over the winter season, there is the opportunity to try snow shoe walking, cross country skiing and ice fishing. The amazing Salamajärvi National Park and its hiking trails are also within an hour’s driving distance from Matkailukeskus Niemenharju.

The Huopanankoski rapids are among Finland’s oldest recreational fishing rapids. They are also a nationally significant cultural environment and a locally significant cultural landscape. The Huopanankoski rapids, in Viitasaari, have become famous through writer Juhani Aho’s work.

The ABC Viitasaari service station, next to the beautiful Lake Keitele, by road E75, operates almost entirely on renewable energy. Its energy is generated from ground heat, wind and biomass. Salamajärvi National Park expands over an area of 60 km2 and is one of Southern Finland’s largest protected areas. Its specialities include mire ecosystems, undisturbed forest lakes, virgin forests, forest reindeer and its versatile bird population. The stone dual-arch bridge over River Heinäjoki is located in the Pihtipudas centre. It was completed in 1924. The Heinäjoki Bridge was a part of road E75 until 1962. In 1982, it became a museum bridge.

The Heinäjoki nature trail is located close to Pihtipudas’ centre and passes through both wilderness and built-up areas. The trail includes 2 km of duckboard trail, a lean-to, two observation towers, a pontoon bridge, wooden bridge across the River Heinäjoki, information/break shelter, toilet/store and a gate at the start. The full length of the route is 6.5 km.

The church was built during the famine of 1864–1867. Construction was led by Otto Korkiakoski, a master builder from Sievi, who is said to have drawn the plans for the church on a plank. The church is of a harmonious cruciform design, decorated with many wood carvings. The church has two altarpieces.The first one is from the 1910s, and the other one was made by Esko Töyrylä in the 1950s.

Tuulenhovi is a 3-storey planed log cottage, built in 1992 and is fit for year-round habitation. The house is located in Kinnula by Lake Markojärvi.

A five-kilometre long, marked leisure track with resting places leads to Rillankivi, an old boundary stone. The track is situated about 40 km from the Pihtipudas centre.
The Pikku Peura event and conference venue by the glittering Lake Valkeisjärvi works wonderfully as a place for private and business functions. The atmospheric venue in the near vicinity of the Peura Trail hiking routes and in the midst of expansive hunting grounds is an ideal place for business and hunting parties. The Suurijärvi recreational route is an extensive and versatile collection of trails from Muurasjärvi in the Pihtipudas municipality to the Jääkolu boundary stone. The route is connected to the Peura Trail, and it is located in the Suurijärvi area in the Pihtipudas municipality. The total length of the marked routes is 30 km.
The small wooden cruciform church of Pihtipudas, dating from 1783, is the oldest church in Central Finland still in use. The master builder was Simon Silvén from Kalajoki. The Muurasjärvi village has its own church, which was designed by architect Esko Laitinen and completed in 1963. Furthermore, Finland’s first Church of silence for travellers is located in Elämäjärvi, in Pihtipudas.

The Tervamäki chapel is a haven of good music and a variety of smaller and bigger events. The chapel offers a unique setting for concerts, retreats, weddings, memorials and conferences. It is located on a scenic spot by Lake Keitele in Suovanlahti in the Viitasaari municipality.
The Kivimäen kierros is a five-kilometre nature trail located next to the bike track running from the Pihtipudas centre to Rillankivi. On top of Kivimäki hill, you will find the Kivimäki observation tower, a lean-to and a camp-fire pit.
Petäjäniemi, located in Kinnula by the clear and fish-rich Lake Kivijärvi, is a recently refurbished log house. The expansive and beautifully planted garden has a gentle slope to the lake and offers a safe environment for families with children. The distance to Kinnula centre is 10 km.
Viitasaari’s striking cruciform church is located in Haapasaari, a walking distance from the town centre. The church was designed by architect T.H. Granstedt. In 1925, the church was repaired in accordance with Architect Alvar Aalto’s designs; the latest fairly major repair was carried out in 1989. The church is open during the summer months on weekdays; you will also find a guide in the church during the opening hours. During the rest of the year, the church is open by appointment.

The Kivijärvi Local Museum is based in an old granary, located in the centre of the village. The old two-storey granary, with a floor space of 380 m2, was built in 1858. The downstairs has eight separate grain silos, and the upstairs is one big open space. There is an old barn in the yard outside. Open during the summer months.

Hännilänsalmi Camping is a pleasant campsite in Viitasaari, in northern Central Finland by Lake Keitele. Our campsite can be accessed by land or water. It is also an easy distance from road E75 and the blue road.
The old Valoharju School building in Kivijärvi functions now as a school museum. One of the classrooms has been restored as an old-fashioned classroom, with various different objects related to school life. Open during the summer months.

The Keihärinkoski Observation Tower stands on the highest point of Luotolansaari Island, at the top of Täivuori Hill. The wooden observation tower, which is 12 metres high, was built in 2004. There is a road all the way there. A 1-km nature trail is also situated in the area.

Pyhä Puu, the sacred tree, is a unique memorial in Central Finland. It is located in Tikankangas, 10 km from Kinnula’s centre towards Silkkiperä and from there towards Koirasalmi. There are signposts to the tree from Kontumäki Road.

Myllykoski in Kinnula has been named after the old mills (mylly=mill), which used to be located in Ylämyllylä, Alamyllylä and Töpönkoski.

Koirajärvi lakes in Salamajärvi National Park consist of five lakes: Iso and Pieni Koirajärvi, Kaunislampi, Ahvenlampi and Heikinlampi.
The second largest lake in Central Finland, Lake Keitele, stretches from Viitasaari all the way to Äänekoski. Water quality in Lake Keitele ranges between good and excellent – the classification depends on the area.
Lake Kolima is a 30-kilometre-long and approx. 5-kilometre-wide rugged and deep lake in Pihtipudas.
